Our Church History
On Sunday afternoon, April 10, 1932, a presbytery met in Pine
Mountain Schoolhouse with the purpose of organizing a church for
the community. The church began meeting at the schoolhouse with
26 charter members and Rev. Joe Greer conducting the services.
Poovey's Chapel Baptist Church is named after Lawson A. Poovey who
had donated the land to the county for a schoolhouse in the early
twenties. W.F. Hatley later purchased the land and schoolhouse from
the state for the purpose of organizing a church.

The first sanctuary (left in the picture) completed
in 1947 is now one of our education buildings and has classrooms,
a library and media center, and a history room. The second sanctuary
(center in picture) was completed in 1959 and is now being used
for classrooms.

Our present sanctuary was completed and occupied
in November of 2004. It has a seating capacity of 600 people.
The new building also includes a gymnasium and fellowship hall
on the lower level.
Our purpose in life is to worship and glorify
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We invite everyone to come
and worship with the body of Christ at Poovey's Chapel Baptist
Church.
Our ministry at Poovey's Chapel Baptist Church
is to reach out to the people of this world that are searching
for something to bring them hope in a day and time when there
seems to be none. It is our goal to see sinners come to a true
knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for He is the hope
of the world. Our

A special thanks to Coleen Coffey and the history
committee for their time and dedication to maintaining not only
the history of Poovey's Chapel, but also helping to maintain
our divine purpose for the present and future. Go
ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:(Mat 28:19)
